2025 Scholarship Recipients

Get to know the 2025 Thompson Legacy Scholarship Recipients!

Katlyn Gibson

Hi! My name is Katlyn Gibson, and I am so honored to be chosen as one of this year’s scholarship recipients.

I am excited to be attending Louisiana State University, where I’ll be majoring in Biology. After college, I hope to attend medical school and become a physician, with a focus on serving rural and underserved communities—just like the one I grew up in.

In high school, I was honored to be a member of both the National Honor Society and Sigma Kappa Delta Honor Society. I also had the opportunity to represent my school at Alabama Girls State and in the inaugural class of the Trojan Patriot Academy.

My extracurricular involvement has been one of my favorite parts of high school—serving as President of the Leo Club, Class Secretary, and a Varsity Cheerleader has taught me leadership, dedication, and teamwork. I’ve also been involved with the Alabama National Guard Youth Council, Youth Chamber of Commerce, Robotics, and HOSA.

A fun fact about me is that I am currently learning sign language, and I plan to take more classes in college to continue perfecting this skill!

Volunteer work is especially close to my heart. From tutoring students of all ages, to volunteering at Southeast Health and the Troy Public Library, to packaging and delivering food with Turkeys From Heaven, I’ve been fortunate to give back to my community in meaningful ways.

Growing up in a rural community, I witnessed how difficult it can be for families to access healthcare. That experience motivated me to pursue a career in medicine so I can return to rural areas and provide the care people need. I want to not only be a doctor, but also a community advocate and mentor for others who want to follow this path.

I’d like to thank my family, friends, and teachers who have supported and encouraged me throughout this journey. Your belief in me has made all the difference.

Alisa Fulford

Hi! I'm Alisa Fulford, a graduating senior at Geneva County High School. While I'm interested in psychology and helping others, I also am a big fan of the arts! In my free time, I enjoy filmmaking and graphic engineering. It may not be my main goal, but maybe one day you'll see one of my works on the big screen! Go Dawgs!

I will be attending Wallace Community College in Dothan on a full-tuition academic scholarship before transferring after 1-2 years to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I aim to complete my general studies at Wallace before pursuing my Bachelor's at UAB in Psychology and Neuroscience.

Growing up, I struggled with my mental health, but I was fortunate to receive support from professionals over the years. I always believed that if I could help even one person, one child, like they helped me, I would feel a sense of accomplishment. Ultimately, I would know that everything I went through was worth it. I really believe that studying Psychology and Neuroscience can help me understand what drives people and the challenges they face. If I can get a better grasp of myself and others, maybe I can help more than just one person. I wouldn't be where I am today without my counselors and friends who took the time to understand and accept me, not only for who I am but also for who I am not.
